Manual Therapy

Hands-on care to help you move forward.

Manual therapy is one of the tools we use at Avante Physical Therapy to help reduce symptoms, improve movement, and create an opportunity for meaningful progress.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include hands-on techniques directed at muscles, joints, and other tissues.

Our goal is to use manual therapy when it can help—then build on those changes through movement, exercise, education, and progressive loading.

What Is Manual Therapy?

Manual therapy refers to a variety of hands-on techniques used by physical therapists to address pain, movement limitations, and other musculoskeletal symptoms.

Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

  • Joint mobilization

  • Joint manipulation when appropriate

  • Soft-tissue techniques

  • Assisted movement and mobility techniques

  • Hands-on techniques to address muscle and joint symptoms

There isn't one technique that's right for everyone.

We select treatment based on you, your symptoms, your goals, and how you respond.

What Can Manual Therapy Help With?

Manual therapy may be useful as part of treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal problems, including:

  • Neck pain

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Hip pain

  • Knee pain

  • Joint stiffness

  • Muscle pain or tension

  • Restricted or painful movement

  • Sports and exercise-related injuries

  • Post-operative rehabilitation

The goal isn't simply to identify something that's "tight" and repeatedly work on it.

We want to understand why you're here, what is limiting you, and what needs to happen next.

Manual Therapy Is a Tool—Not the Destination

We think hands-on treatment can be valuable.

We also believe feeling better on the treatment table is different from being prepared for the demands of your life.

Manual therapy may help reduce symptoms or improve movement in the short term. When it does, we want to take advantage of that opportunity.

That may mean following treatment with:

Movement. Strength. Exercise. Progressive loading. Activity modification. Education.

The goal is to turn positive changes during your appointment into progress that matters outside of it.
